Melton Constable
East Junction

1959

In 1901, two new M&GN type 1a signal boxes were opened at the same time to control the new line arrangements. Melton East box had fifty two levers and a Tyers No. 1 Improved (restoring) tablet instrument for the single line to Guestwick. It was sited at the Yarmouth end of the platform, closer than the original box had been. The lines between Melton East and West were worked on the permissive block system, allowing two trains to occupy them. Both platforms and the goods reception road were signalled for both directions of running. The home signals in each direction were fitted with a calling on arm , lowered only when the approaching train had been brought to a stand, to allow trains to draw forward at a maximum speed of 4 miles an hour into the occupied platform. The maximum speed approaching Melton Constable from any direction was 20 miles an hour.

Melton East signal box was a Wilkinson & Jarvis design and was somewhat unusual, as it was fenestrated around the entire upper floor. The signal shown, was also under construction. It was made by Saxby & Farmer and the upper arm was destined to become the starting signal for the line to Gt Yarmouth.

By 1902, the signal shown in the left had photo had been replaced by Gt Northern style signals. To the left of the signalbase can be seen a Class A 4-4-0 loco being coaled and watered. The minature signal to allow exit from the area is still an old Eastern & Midlands signal.

During 1909, Clayton fogging machines were provided. The apparatus for the Up distant signals was worked from a ground frame in the fork of the Yarmouth and Norwich lines and the apparatus for the King's Lynn and Cromer line Down distants was worked from levers near the East box. The King's Lynn distant machine was also worked from a lever near the West box.

The Norwich branch, in front of the camera, bears off to the right. The Gt Yarmouth track bears off to the left, descending at 1 in 100 and immediately to its left are the Wingate sidings, where trains were disassembled and assembled on a daily basis. The calling-on arm on the Norwich branch home signal and the miniature signals on the Gt Yarmouth line bear testimony to the complicated everyday traffic movements.

The Signalbox itself is of M&GN Type 1, with decorative bargeboards: extra windows have been provided in the rear for improved sighting of the Up Sidings. There is a large oil lamp fixed to the corner, to illuminate the Tablet Apparatus for the Single Line to Norwich. On the right of the Box is the 'facing road' Down Starting Signal, tubular posts on a modern steel girder bracket. Beyond is the remains of the Yarmouth Line trackbed, together with 2 large Swan-neck Gas Lamps. There are also rear views of 2 late LNER Standard disc signals, one in the front right hand foreground.

The late Ted Tuddenham, Signalman at Melton Constable East, poses for the camera inside the Box. In front of him is the Saxby & Farmer 52 lever 4" Duplex frame, with the Block Shelf above. On this are the "Pegging" and"non-Pegging" Block Instruments, the latter also with handles - formerly used for Routing Signals. Above the Shelf hangs the Diagram, and - at the end - is the Tyer's No.1 Tablet Instrument, for the Norwich line. At the far end is a slatted-back chair, a little the worse for wear, and the clock is, a little unusually, placed on the end wall. On top of the locker on the right, is the Train Register Book, on its sloping desk, and above is the Control Phone. At the far end of the locker is a modern Telephone Concentrator. The box is lit by gas, the lights above suspended in their small globes. M&GN Circle

Moving to the East end of Melton Constable Station, these are the remains of the line to Yarmouth, from the centre of the junction. The trackbed curves round to the left, cut just short of the junction points. The Engineer's Sidings are on the extreme left, with a front view of an LNER revolving disc signal. Beyond the angle of the junction is a tarred wooden Permanent Way Hut, adjacent to which, on the right is the Hut for the Engineer's Rail Motor Trolley. The Norwich single line facing points are on the right, protected by the Up Home Signal, a CBT on a tall concrete post - set on a LH Bracket is a Miniature 'T" CBT Calling-on arm. The Shunt Sidings leading from the Works are on the extreme right, with Vans and Mineral wagons standing.

The Yarmouth and Lynn lines were closed on 2nd March 1959 but the others remained in use, although the Norwich line was for goods only. Even this was closed to Guestwick when the new Themelthorpe cut-off was opened on 12th September 1960.Operation was concentrated on Melton East box and Melton West box was closed on 1st January 1961. The site remained open under the control of the East box until 6th April 1964.
