In 1901, two new M&GN type 1a signal boxes were opened at the same time to control the new line arrangements. Melton West box had forty six levers and was sited in the angle of the junction rather than at the platform end. The lines between Melton East and West were worked on the permissive block system, allowing two trains to occupy them. Both platforms and the goods reception road were signalled for both directions of running. The home signals in each direction were fitted with a calling on arm , lowered only when the approaching train had been brought to a stand, to allow trains to draw forward at a maximum speed of 4 miles an hour into the occupied platform. The maximum speed approaching Melton Constable from any direction was 20 miles an hour. Melton West box was seen as the lesser location and from 1910 it was closed except when required to be open for trains to and from the Cromer line.

During 1909, Clayton fogging machines were provided. The apparatus for the Up distant signals was worked from a ground frame in the fork of the Yarmouth and Norwich lines and the apparatus for the King's Lynn and Cromer line Down distants was worked from levers near the East box. The King's Lynn distant machine was also worked from a lever near the West box.

The first West Box stood in the centre, next to the middle of the Overbridge. Personalities: Mike Back; Charlie Faulkner and Ted Tuddenham.
